TEFC Summer Focus
This summer we will be highlighting our statement of faith. As we move forward in this time of transition as a church family it is important to be praying for the Lord to lead and direct us, it is also important to remember who we are as a church. One of the ways we do that is by being reminded of our theological convictions and the greater body that we are apart of. The Evangelical Free Church of Canada is an association of autonomous churches united in a common commitment to God’s evangel –the gospel of Jesus Christ, who died and rose again to give us eternal life. To God’s glory, the gospel is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes. Our essential theological convictions are vitally connected to this gospel. STATEMENT 1: GOD’S GOSPEL ORIGINATES IN AND EXPRESSES THE WONDROUS PERFECTIONS OF THE ETERNAL, TRIUNE GOD. We believe in one God, Creator of all things, holy, infinitely perfect, and eternally existing in a loving unity of three equally divine Persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Having limitless knowledge and sovereign power, God has graciously purposed from eternity to redeem a people for Himself and to make all things new for His own glory. Our first statement highlights our firm conviction in the trinity that there is ONE God existing in three equally divine persons (Father, Son and Holy Spirit). This God is the creator of all things, he is Holy, and Perfect. He has limitless knowelge, sovereign power and is in the buisness of the redemption. The word trinity is not explicitly used in scripture, but the idea that there is one God existing in three equally divine persons is clearly seen in the word. Even from the first verses of Genesis we see evidence of these divine persons. Genesis 1:2 says that as creation is beginning to take shape "the spirit of God was hovering over the waters". In the gospel of John, Jesus speaks about how he has come to do his Fathers will, and that if we know Jesus we know the Father. He also speaks of this coming helper (Holy Spirit) that will come and work in and through us. In John 16:14-15 Jesus says "He (the Spirit) will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you." These two verses speak clearly of this interworking relationship between the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit. Jesus also says in Matthew 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,". As followers of Christ publicly declare to live their lives for Jesus through baptism we see Jesus instruction to baptize them in the names of these divine persons. The relationship bewteen these three divine persons will always partially be a mystery to us on this side of heaven. We do know however that Jesus is all about his Father's buiseness and that the Spirit is all about golorifying Jesus, He wants to glorify Jesus in us and through us so that others might know the greatness of who Jesus is this is what the Spirit is all about. This first statement speaks to the God we worship, a perfect, Holy God who exists in three divine persons. But is a relational and active God working to bring about the story of redemption in the lives of his creation through the will of the Father, the sarifice of the Son, and the continuing work of the Holy Spirit. |
