Laying down our Idols
To embrace Kingdom life is to continually lay down our idols so that we may completely follow JESUS and FOLLOW in his ways. "You shall not make yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth." - Exodus 20:4. Idols were a big deal in the old testament. One of the ten commandments explicitly tells us to not make or worship Idols. But when you take a look through the old testament its one of the first things Israel does everytime they begin to turn away from God. There are many times where the wickedness and corruption of the Israelites leads them to worshiping Idols. To worship an idol is to worship something else instead of God, its when something else takes the top priority of our lives. Kingdom life is about living in relationship with the king, without the king there is no kingdom. In the passage we looked at last week from Luke 9 Jesus has three seperate interactions with individuals about whether they would follow him or not. In these interactions we see the things that get in the way of these individuals choosing to follow Jesus. What we end up seeing is the idols they wont lay down to follow Him. These idols can come in many forms comfort, security, money, family etc. It's important to realize these idols come in many forms but that none of them can take the place of Jesus in our lives. As we consider this, what might be some of the Idols in your own life that are in the way of you following Jesus more fully? This week, we will look at the power of the Kingdom, that the Kingdom of God is a spiritual Kingdom, and that there is a power that comes with being part of the kingdom. The understanding and recongnition of this power is an essential part of being part of the Kingdom of God. Please take time to read Luke 11:14-28, considering and meditating on how Jesus' words lead us into a deeper life with him.
