Last week, the parable of the vineyard labourers from Matthew 20:1-16 concludes with a proverbial saying from Jesus: "So the last will be first, and the first last."  This causes us to wonder what makes this the case.  What makes the first last and the last first?  This first/last dynamic is part of the kingdom life we are called to live as followers of Jesus.

The answer is mostly rooted in the ways that respond to Jesus and to each other. Jesus calls his followers to serve, yet, the story shows us that some of his servants carry presumptions of their own importance or entitlement into the kingdom. Rather than presume our own benefits, blessings, or recognition, we are to be thankful and joyful about the generosity of our king. When we make presumptions about our own position or standing in the kingdom, we place ourselves first but consequently become the last.

Please consider the following questions as we aim to live kingdom life, serving Jesus out of gratitude rather than out of what we will get out of it.
- How has Jesus called you to serve "in his vineyard?"  Where do you see him leading you to serve him or the needs of others?
- When are you tempted to think of yourself as being superior or higher than others? What do you feel entitled to as a Christian?  On what basis do you compare yourself with others?
- How can you foster a deeper appreciation and gratitude about the generosity of God towards others? What happens when we do this rather than strive for our own presumed blessings?

This week, we will see the how the example of Jesus motivates our service in the kingdom.  Jesus puts our pursuits for him into a clearer perspecitve on what is important in his kingdom.  Please take time to read Matthew 20:17-28, considering and meditating on how Jesus' words lead us into a deeper life with him.
