A Note from Pastor Brett
This past Friday was Kindle (worship and small group night) at Youth. I have the privilege of leading worship on those nights for our youth ministry. As most of you know I spent ten years here at Taber EFC leading the youth ministry, and five years before that being a youth leader either here or at a church in Edmonton. Youth ministry is still close to my heart, though I don’t miss the responsibility of leading youth as a whole, it’s been fun being able to be around our youth ministry semi regularly. This past Friday the topic they were talking through in small group was around Identity, specifically our identity once we are in Christ. Identity is a massively important piece of our faith. How we see ourselves in light of Christ and what he has done for us is vital. When we see ourselves in our old self more than in Christ, it can distort our view of faith, and what Jesus calls us out of and into. But we can also see ourselves greater than we ought as well. Jesus’s disciples argued amongst themselves about who was the greatest (Luke 9:1) in which Jesus rebukes them and says the “For who is least among you all – he is the greatest”. Paul dealt with this as well, especially among Jewish believers who saw their “covenant standing” as a shield against God’s judgment, that they were absolved from his judgment through the law because they were “his people”. Paul has to remind them that all are under God’s righteous judgement and in need of a saviour, and that it’s Jesus, not covenant standing, or works that brings us into right relationship with God. We will look at this example from Paul more on Sunday during the sermon. In the midst of our world and the labels that it throws out to us – Conservative, liberal, socialist, introvert, extrovert, millennials, boomers, middle class, rich, poor, educated, apprentice the list is never ending…there are better words to describe those in Christ – redeemed, free, saved, forgiven, loved, gifted, purposeful, co-heirs, disciples. It’s essential, in the midst of our day to day, for each of us to remember who we are in Christ, because how we see ourselves and the truth of who we are directly impacts all of our relationships and our decisions. May you continue to pursue Jesus and know your identity in him. Sunday: This Sunday we are continuing our series in Romans. Pastor Brett will speak on Romans 3:1-20 and Mat Reed will lead in worship. We are currently waiting on more scripture journals to arrive but the study guide for the above text will be available on Sunday morning. Upcoming: Congregational meeting February 6th @ 7:00pm Prayer Night February 12th @ 7:00pm. Please mark this on your calendar, we would like to see the church come together and pray together for our candidating weekend as well as to continue to pray for the needs of the church. Candidating weekend February 17-18th – Details coming soon. |
